Artist Statement: For as long as I can remember, writing and making people laugh has always been my primary hobby and talent that I never knew would lead me to where I am today. I’m not sure if they are synonymous but for me they come easier than a blink of these eyes. My family often times remind me of how mouthy I was as a toddler and how I would have them laughing at my audacity. All of this seems like the perfect combination for a powerful performance artist. No thought of this path had ever crossed my childish mind as I continued to wow people with my hidden talents. Once in the back of music class I was playing vocaly with a song the teacher was sharing. I began singing in an operatic pitch and my classmates would laugh every time I did it, however my teacher was intrigued and she called me in front of the class. I had to repeat that line over and over in the same pitch I had in the back of the class and about a week later, I was performing it at the PTA Christmas Program. The crowd was blown away because my voice was so strong for my small stature. That was just one of many times my playful behavior got me a spotlight in the performance realm.
Although I never saw myself being a performer I have no regrets about the path taken as it has molded me to be the woman I know my grandmother would be proud of. Artist life has taught me some valuable lessons and I’ve met many beautiful souls that hesitate not to tell me how my words and performance make them feel. Spoken Word helped me shed a lot of fear and gave me confidence that assisted me in relocating to another state with very little financial help. I’ve always been a determined individual because I’ve had to fight for the right to be myself in a world of people trying to fit in. Because that has never been my focus, I receive a lot of push-back still to this day, but there’s a song in my heart and a beat in my feet that won't allow me to conform and bend too far.
I believe I am a messenger sent here to give light, bring joy and anyone who has ever known me, even if it's for one minute can attest to this. Going with the Flow is more than a motto and is not the definition for being lazy and inconsiderate; it's a way of life, and in that flow you must be like water. I’m an example with a word to share and I just hope your heart is open enough to receive it.
